Someone let Alex into the US History Again...
So first off, some more fulfilling of the "Top Five Lists" meme. This is for [info]lafourchette, who has been busy busy busy working on her thesis and dealing with grad school woes, so I wanted to do a good job. Kate, I give you internet hearts: ♥ ♥ ♥ And my top five awkward moments in US History.

The Cool Kids Won't Let Harry S Truman Sit at Their Table.

Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr have a Civilised Conversation. (Yes, it's a repeat joke, but I really wanted to illustrate it! Hamilton is fun to draw, plus: obsessed.)

Daniel Webster is Interrupted in Senate by His Cellular Phone. (I kind of like to imagine he has a really embarrassing ringtone.)

Thomas Jefferson, King of the Faeries, Uses His Giant Robot to Fend Off British Tyranny. (In the end, everything has a crossover with Harry Potter. EVERYTHING.)

MEANWHILE, IN REAL COMIC BOOKS:

Captain America came out last week and it contained this panel which I did not need to photoshop in any way. Most of the time, this comic is free of the usual Marvel one-liners, and everything is DEADLY SERIOUS but occasionally the surreal happens, and then I scan and post it to livejournal.

But really this is kind of in reference to a post on [info]analogic's journal, where she talked about comics she liked and/or read and I thought I could be really nerdy and do that too.

Okay, so here is a list of comics that I read on a monthly basis:
-- Captain America
-- Daredevil
-- Immortal Iron Fist
-- Runaways (Monthly's a biiig lie on that one, though.)
-- Invincible
-- Green Lantern (Okay, I'm juuust picking this one up.)
-- All Star Superman
-- Powers
-- Criminal
-- Scalped
-- Ex Machina

Recs are very much welcome, I can usually get stuff for free through my college, so I'm always pretty willing to try stuff. ([info]sarisa, your Hellboy suggestion was ace.) Blah blah, feel free to rank various Robins in order of sexiness or talk about how the cruel fate you are plotting for Joe Quesada.

Also, look! Over there! anonymous meme! I'm weak, and caved :/

I always suspected that JP Morgan was a demon and that Tesla was, and if you believe the crazy people from the tabloids, still a super hero.

You should read L.A. Confidential, while it is certainly not as fantastical and not a comic, it does add something to the list above. It involves sex, drugs, murder, and hybrid child monster. All the good stuff really.

Maybe now I can get around to the books you have lent me.

You know when you hit reply under someone's comment you reply to their comment, not the post.

SEX + DRUGS = SURPRISINGLY NOT MY FAVORITE THINGS, and I wouldn't say the crime genre is either, but I'll definitely check it out.

Glad that Hellboy pleased-- have you read up B.P.R.D yet? Equally delicious. And speaking in terms of current or recently of:

Not sure if you're an X-type girl, but Astonishing X-Men has had a good run under the Whedon eye, and can only pass on to some fine Ellis authorship. The current run of X-Factor by way of Peter David is also pretty excellent. Some good Marvel peripherals are Thunderbolts and Nextwave (Ellis, again) and New Avengers (sweet street dealin'). If you go a little further back, Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men is also deserving.

As for taking in the DC side, hm, maybe Formerly Known As The Justice League? Or, Grant Morrison's JLA run? BOXING GLOVE ARROW, HA HA. Pretty freakin' fantastic. (That being said, I'll champion near everything he's written-- we have had a turbulent affair over the years, Mssr Morrison and I, but I'll still keep his slippers by the bedside when all's said and done.) He can be a bit acid trippy (The Invisibles, Sebastian O, Seaguy), but also has good, solid mainstreamverse offerings: Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, All Star Superman (current), etc.

Have you done a lot of Loeb&Sale? They tagteam miniseries like awesome. Nobody talks the goddamn Batman without The Long Halloween and Dark Victory; also, there's the follow-up in Catwoman: When In Rome. (The colour miniseries for Marvel were also good: Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray, and ~soon~ Captain America: White.)

Letsee, some good currently publishing DC peripherals are Blue Beetle ♥ ♥ ♥ and Booster Gold. I have to admit that I'm less inclined to verse that way, too. I backread more often than not. Geoff Johns's tenure on Flash? Soliddd. Maybe it would be easier if I could remember what you've read or not, haha-- any of the Wildstorm/Vertigo obvious? Transmetropolitain, The Authority, Planetary, Preacher, etc.

I wish I had my collection here with me; would be easier to think about these things.

HAVE A THEME SONG WHILE YOU CONTEMPLATE YOUR READINGS: http://venusgospel.net/Thunder Thighs - Nextwave.mp3

OKAY, COMMENTING TIME.

I'm still working my way through the Hellboy stuffs at the moment, but definitely plan to consume all this universe has to offer NOM NOM NOM.

I kind of have a random dislike of the X-men that means I dislike the X-men, but I did like/have read Whedon's Astonishing and enjoyed it surprising amounts, but I still don't like the X-men and the danger room is a dumb villain. BUT I'll probably read Morrison's run sometimes in the near future.

MOVING ON-- I have read all of Nextwave. It was pretty glorious. I've read the first trade of Thunderbolts as that seems to be how I'm getting Thunderbolts and it was good in a way very different than Nextwave.

OKAY, SO MY OPINION ON GRANT MORRISON: I love about half of what he's written, but the other half of the time he's on too many drugs and I can't understand what's going on. SO. I kinda skipped to all the Byron/Shelley parts in Invisibles oh ho ho, could not understand ANYTHING in Batman, but enjoyed the heck out of his Justice League and Sebastian O, because fop is a language I DO speak.

Another language I speak is JLI, soo I've read the "Formerly Known as.." stuff as well as the original 80s-90s run. THIS WAS THE FIRST THING I READ FROM DC, AND WHEN I FOUND OUT WHAT HAPPENED TO ALL THE CHARACTERS, IT BROKE MY HEART. (My favs were Ted and Max, wise choice there.) Really, the only reason I haven't bought Booster Gold yet because Evil!Max is on the cover. Will probably cave soon.

The reason I bought Green Lantern instead of Blue Beetle is 'cause one was the first issue of an origin story arc, thus the perfect place to start reading, and one was the creative team's final issue? But if it comes with hearts, I'll def check out the trades.

Haven't read anything Loeb/Sale, but I believe I have access to nearly the complete oeuvre, so good times in recommendation city there.

Doesn't Planetary have one more issue? I told myself I would read it when it finished. IIII don't know how realistic a position this is.

Here's me shootin' off some easy ones, and getting blanked like lazy. Well played, Alex, well played. Here's something else, hopefully:

Have I recommended Ruse to you? I'm sure I have, but here it is again-- Sherlock Holmes pseudo-steampunk but more magical like unicorns. Go for Mark Waid, because it drops off a little with his departure. Batgirl: Year One. (I HAVE TOLD YOU ABOUT THESE, I SWEAR.) Jenny Sparks: The Secret History of the Authority. Maus, for Holocaust survivor and complex undefinable father-son relationships. Superman: Red Son. Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn and Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight. Top Ten, superheroing Alan Moore-style. Man, it's suddenly so hard to remember all the good bits. But, definitely Blue Beetle vol.3-- it's good in the way that makes you think wacky hijinks that only peripheral Marvel seems to tag right.

Have you read Days of Future Past? Can't think of any other X-titles that may appeal, maybe the original Uncanny X-Men? They really hit my 60's endearing comical vibes. Been collected as Masterworks, if that helps. Did you like the Dark Phoenix Saga? It characterizes much of the Claremont-era strengths, despite (or actually because) of the intense relationships and human element and drama and space battles on the dark side of the moon.

Kitty's Fairy Tale was pretty cute! The thing with X-Men, or really, any Marvel property between the classic era and the modern now-era is that they didn't have this notion of trade paperbacks of our day, so the 6-issue story arc format wasn't all that common; it results in messy storytelling, because writers would come and go and leave bits everywhere, and editorial wasn't nearly as fascist. But, if you kept on reading, you were always rewarded with some really great comic book in all the fuss. Anyway.

You know what I skipped in my Invisibles? Marquis de Sade storyhour. Like I needed more nightmares in relation to 120 Days of Sodom. :(

Planetary is never, ever going to end. Might as well just go ahead and read it-- on that note, New Universal. Another ongoing Ellis, whom I can never refuse.

Hey, well, I only read Sebastian O because you recommended it to me previously. So :D

You haven't recommended Ruse to me but with that description I will probably not rest until I have found and consumed its tasty inner-parts.

For the other stuff, I've read Red Son before because hahahaha Communists, and I've pretty much exhausted all the Alan Moore stuff that isn't porn with Alice in Wonderland-- I think Miracleman was my favorite. But the other stuff is new and I know I can find at least half of it easy.

The thing about me and comics is that at the library they have, well, extended archives of pretty much every major superhero title back to about 1964, so it's very easy to find old stuffs. But the endless supply of comics cuts off in the early-to-mid ninties, and it's much harder to find non-pretentious Vertigo titles from this point on. They do collect some more mainstream stuff if it's Batman, or written by a big-name guy. Other stuff, I have to buy. So recs of long arcs of old Marvel comics are pretty good.

I think my favorite thing currently being written by Ellis is Fell.
